Google Business Profile in Tanzania: Setup, Verification & Optimisation
13 June 2026 · 7 min read
Your Google Business Profile is, for most Tanzanian businesses, more valuable than the website. It appears above search results, on Maps, and it's where customers call, message and get directions. It is also free — and mostly neglected.
Setting it up
- ✦Search your business name first — an unclaimed listing may already exist.
- ✦Use your exact legal or trading name. No keyword stuffing in the name field; it risks suspension.
- ✦Pick the most specific primary category available, then add secondaries.
- ✦Set a service area if you deliver across Dar es Salaam or nationally.
Verification in Tanzania
Verification is usually by video, phone or postcard. Video verification is now the most common: be ready to film your signage, street context, interior, equipment and proof of management in one unbroken take. Have utility bills or business licence documents on hand.
Optimisation checklist
- ✦Description with your main service and city, written for humans.
- ✦Every service and product listed with prices where possible.
- ✦Photos: exterior, interior, team, products, at work — geo-relevant and recent.
- ✦Messaging enabled, with someone actually monitoring it.
- ✦Weekly Google Posts; they influence engagement signals.
- ✦UTM-tagged website link so you can see profile traffic in analytics.
What suppresses listings
- ✦Keyword-stuffed business names.
- ✦Fake addresses or virtual offices without staffed presence.
- ✦Review gating or obviously purchased reviews.
- ✦Inconsistent details across the web.
Track the right numbers
In profile insights, watch calls, direction requests, messages and website clicks — not views. Those four are revenue signals.
