The SEO Checklist Every Tanzanian Website Should Pass

2 August 2026 · 9 min read

Search engine optimisation in Tanzania is still an unfair advantage, because most competitors are not doing the basics. This is the checklist we run on every site we take on — work through it before you spend a shilling on advertising.

Technical foundations

  • One version of the site: pick https and either www or non-www, and redirect the rest.
  • A working XML sitemap, submitted in Google Search Console.
  • A robots.txt that allows crawling and references the sitemap.
  • Self-referencing canonical tags on every page.
  • No indexable staging or duplicate domains.
  • Fast mobile performance and no crawl errors.

On-page essentials

  • Unique title under about 60 characters, containing the service and the city where relevant.
  • Unique meta description under about 155 characters that reads like an invitation, not a keyword list.
  • One H1 per page, then a sensible H2 and H3 hierarchy with no skipped levels.
  • Descriptive alt text on every image.
  • Descriptive link text — never 'click here' or 'learn more'.
  • Content that answers the search intent in the first screen, not after four paragraphs of preamble.

Local SEO for Tanzania

  • A complete, verified Google Business Profile with accurate hours, categories and photos.
  • Consistent name, address and phone number across every directory listing.
  • Location pages for the cities you genuinely serve — Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza — with distinct content, not copy-paste.
  • Reviews requested systematically and answered publicly.
  • LocalBusiness structured data on the contact and location pages.

Content and authority

Publish pages that answer the questions your customers type: costs, comparisons, how-to and city-specific queries. Then earn links from Tanzanian media, associations, partners and suppliers. Volume without relevance does nothing; a handful of genuine local links moves rankings.
