Web Design vs Web Development: What You're Actually Buying
22 July 2026 · 7 min read
Plenty of website projects in Tanzania go wrong not because anyone is incompetent, but because the client bought one discipline and expected four. Design, development, content and search are separate crafts. Knowing which you are paying for is the whole game.
Design
Structure and appearance: what goes on each page, in what order, and how it looks and feels on a phone. Good design decides the hierarchy before it decides the colour.
Development
Turning that into a fast, secure, editable website: templates, integrations, forms, payments, accessibility and performance. A beautiful design built badly loads slowly, breaks on older phones and cannot be updated by your team.
Content
Words, photography and video. This is the step most often skipped, and the reason so many Tanzanian sites launch six months late — the build finished and nobody had written the About page.
SEO
Search work belongs at the start. URL structure, page hierarchy, metadata, schema, internal linking and page speed are engineering decisions made during the build. Retrofitting them costs several times more than doing them once.
How to scope it properly
- ✦Agree a sitemap and page templates before design begins.
- ✦Name who supplies content, and set the deadline in the contract.
- ✦Define the integrations up front; they drive the timeline more than the design does.
- ✦Set measurable launch criteria: performance score, mobile behaviour, tracking, redirect map.
- ✦Agree who maintains the site after launch, and what that costs monthly.
One team covering all four disciplines removes the finger-pointing that kills multi-vendor web projects. That is the case for an integrated agency rather than a chain of freelancers.
